When you think of a supermodel, you probably don’t think of them going to school, wearing a uniform and growing up in the suburbs Down Under. But that’s exactly what Adut Akech, Australia’s freshest face fashion, was doing just recently. Now living in New York, travelling the world for campaigns and editorials and walking for the likes of Valentino and Chanel, Akech has come a long way from her hometown on Adelaide’s outer fringe.

For our December 2018 issue, Vogue followed Akech—who is this month’s cover star—back home, meeting her family, friends, former teachers and visiting her favourite places. From the boxing ring to her old fibro classrooms, Akech took us on an all-access trip down memory lane, introducing us to her world and proving that yes, she might just be the nicest, most down-to-earth girl in fashion.
