/EH/ as in "bed" and /AE/ as in "bad" should sound different, but most non-native speakers pronounce them the same way. This can turn a word into a completely different word.

We want to make sure that you are using the word that you mean to use so in this lesson you will:

Learn how to pronounce American vowels /EH/ and/AE/

Learn why it is so important to pronounce these sounds correctly

Learn how the wrong pronunciation can turn a word into a different word

Practice the correct American English pronunciation

Homework:
Listen for the difference between /EH/ and /AE/ in native speakers

Notice your pronunciation of /AE/ in your real-life conversations. Are you really saying /AE/? Or does it sound like /EH/?

Recording yourself in a real conversation can give you a better idea of what you are really doing.

/AE/ is always a bigger problem for non-native speakers so you should get some extra practice on this sound.

It is also good to know that the vowel /AE/ is one of the most uniquely pronounced vowels in English. We really do produce this sound in a way that no other language does. Plus, there is a lot of variation among regional dialects of American English!
