Penrhyn Castle Walled Garden – Bangor North Wales – Victorian Era Virtual Walking Tour

Starting point: #What3Words ///concerned.pipe.written

Continuing my trip to North Wales, today I’m visiting Penrhyn Castle, Walled Garden near Bangor on the coast near to Anglesey.

On what is a warm but slightly overcast day the walled gardens are part of the extensive grounds of Penrhyn Castle. The castle itself will feature on a future video.

Starting at hedge path entrance the garden contains areas of formal manicured spaces as well as more tropical bog ground and wild planting.

Conceived as an idea by Head Gardener Walter Speeds, his vision made these gardens one of the top three gardens of the Victorian Era.

Walter Speeds started his 58 year career at Penrhyn in 1862, and was later presented the ‘Royal Horticultural Society Award’ by Queen Victoria in 1897.
The gardens incorporate the Victorians love of the Italian style terraces and balustrades, as well as ponds used to soften the formal areas and collections of plants they gathered from around the world.

Not being clever in my knowledge of flowers or plants I just hope you enjoy viewing these beautiful walled garden areas and its many colourful blooms and plants.
