Remake of one of the most successful German war movies ever (5 German Movie Awards, 1 Golden Globe and 1 Oscar Nomination for "Best Foreign Language Film")

Based upon a true story.

Only a few weeks before the end of World War II, having escaped the massive bombing taking place throughout Germany, sixteen year-old Albert and his mother finally make their way to the relative safety of a small Bavarian town. Albert soon becomes friends with the slightly older Walter.

Even here though, preparations for the war effort are still underway, and Albert, Walter and all of the other students are ordered out of the classroom and into training at the army barracks. Their mission will be to help defend the area's one main bridge. It's not long, however, before their superiors flee the barracks, leaving the bridge's defense completely in the hands of the young and poorly equipped recruits.

When an American tank approaches their town, the students decide to protect the bridge, which creates major friction between Albert and Walter, who is willing to defend the bridge against the enemy at any cost. He miraculously does manage to do just that, but the cost is high -- they lose four comrades. Their mission of defending the bridge has been successful.

But it's still not over. A group of German military engineers arrive planning to blow up the bridge, only to find a resistance they could hardly have expected...
