James E. Faulconer, "A Philosophy of the Family" (2014 Neal A. Maxwell Lecture)

The eighth annual Neal A. Maxwell lecture was presented by James E. Faulconer on November 18, 2014 at Brigham Young University.

Faulconer’s philosophical lecture draws on the work of Emmanual Levinas and Jean-Luc Marion, two recent philosophers who seek to overcome the problems of thinking of marriage in individualistic terms. Faulconer suggests we can construct a philosophy of love and, therefore, a philosophy of family which is more true to Latter-day Saint desires for faithful, covenanted, love.

Faulconer became professor of philosophy at Brigham Young University in 1975 after earning his PhD from Pennsylvania State University. In addition to his work on contemporary European philosophy, he also publishes in Mormon studies, with a particular interest in reading scripture. He currently the academic director of the BYU London Centre.
