Face Shields vs. Face Masks: Which Are Better COVID-19 Protection? Are face shields as good as masks? Which one is most effective at slowing the spread of the novel coronavirus? Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Jordan Wagner, explains the difference between a face mask and face shield.

As coronavirus cases surge across the country, more than half of U.S. states are requiring everyone to wear a face mask in public. So, you made your own DIY face mask and have been diligently wearing it for the past few months to stop the spread of COVID-19 during this crazy novel coronavirus pandemic. Now all of a sudden, you see people walking about with protective face shields. Before you run to your nearest Target store or hop onto Amazon, today, I’m going to be explaining how protective face shields are, the different types of face shields, and key differences between wearing a face covering and a face shield. Face shields can be an additional layer of protection against COVID-19, along with wearing a face mask, practicing safe social distancing, and washing your hands regularly with anti-bacterial soap and water. Shields do not replace face masks, as they do not fit your face and effectively block respiratory droplets from the air around you. For the record, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) does not recommend face shields for everyday activities as a substitute for face coverings. And as most U.S. states are on mandatory face coverings in public, a face shield is not classified as a proper face-covering according to local state and health officials.
