What is a Troponin I test?

Troponin is a protein that regulates the contraction or relaxation of skeletal muscle fibres and the heart. There are three types of it:

Troponin C

Troponin I

Troponin T

Troponin I and T are also known as cardiac troponin. It is released into the bloodstream after a heart attack or myocardial infarction, resulting in a reduction in blood supply to the heart. When the blood supply to the heart is reduced, chest pain and conditions like myocardial ischemia occur.

The Troponin I test is specifically done to check for heart injury and damage. It also helps in early diagnosis of heart conditions (chest pain, heart attack, etc.).

Why is a Troponin I test done?

The Troponin I test is used to diagnose the following conditions:

Chest pain or heaviness in the chest after any physical activity or while resting

Chest pressure and pain accompanied by excessive sweating

To check the risk of myocardial infarction in people who show the above symptoms

Heart attack or myocardial infarction

To determine the extent of damage to the heart after various medical procedures to restore blood flow. These procedures mainly include inserting stents in blocked blood vessels and bypass surgery.

This test is used to detect any damage to the heart cells due to reduced blood flow to the heart. This test is also helpful in identifying low-intensity and early-stage heart attacks that are not detected by standard tests such as ECG. Troponin levels in the blood start increasing only after eight hours of damage to the heart cells and this level reaches its maximum in the next twenty-four hours. This protein can be seen in the blood seven days after the heart cells are damaged. Apart from this, Troponin I test is also used to diagnose conditions related to skeletal muscle, kidney and lungs.
