(17 Mar 2015) Opposition parties in India marched from the parliament to the presidential palace on Tuesday in the capital New Delhi to protest against a land bill proposed by the Bhartiya Janata party-led government.
Members of parliament, including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, and leaders from opposition parties marched along with supporters as policemen were deployed, placing barricades on the route.
Demonstrators shouted anti-government slogans and held banners condemning the government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the land bill.
They claimed the land acquisition bill, which was passed last week in the parliament's lower house, is "anti-farmer".
The bill has been criticised for making it easier for companies to purchase lands for industrial purposes.
While it was passed in the lower house, it is yet to be ratified by the upper house.
After passing through both houses, it has to be signed by the President.
Congress leader Jyotiraditya Scindia said that he had never seen "a government that is so anti-farmer" in the last 65 years.
