To be effective, every organization no matter the size should develop a safety management system and clearly assign safety activities that details lines of authority and responsibilities and the necessary resources to accomplish any assigned task.

In every business, there are individual who should be assigned and involved in developing and implementing the safety management system. This will help you in developing descriptions of the basic positions normally involved in a safety program.

As a member of management, you must understand the importance being accountable for the safety of your employees. And is responsibility for establishing the purpose of the management system, determining measurable objectives, and taking the actions necessary to accomplish specific objectives.

To be successful you must learn to assign specific accountabilities to responsible individuals in the organization. It is important to understand the difference in assigning responsibilities vs. delegating responsibilities. In other words, you cannot delegate your responsibilities. We will cover this in more details in our next video, Defining Roles of Each Position in a Safety Culture

One way to look at it is: if you assign your responsibilities instead of delegate it, you will still have control. In many cases, this could be a new employees, transferred employee, temporary employees, visitors to your site, and permanent part-time contractors.
