Ernest Paul Mamvura Mwazha, widely known as Mutumwa Paul Mwazha or Mudzidzisi, was born on 25 October 1918 at Holy Cross Mission in Chirumanzu District, Midlands Province, Zimbabwe. His birth was surrounded by a remarkable story. During the influenza epidemic of that year, he fell gravely ill shortly after birth and was presumed dead. A German Roman Catholic missionary, Father Schmidt, baptized him in haste, and to everyone’s astonishment, the infant revived soon after the baptism. This event was seen as miraculous by his family, and many later interpreted it as a sign that he had been raised for a divine mission. His mother, Saramina, named him Mamvura, meaning “child of the water” in Shona, reflecting both his frail condition and the circumstances of his survival. After his baptism, he was given the Christian name Paul.
Mwazha grew up in a deeply Christian environment. He attended mission schools where he received both academic and spiritual instruction. As a young man, he trained as a teacher and taught at several schools, including the Howard Institute. During this time, he became increasingly involved in Christian ministry, participating in revival gatherings and prayer meetings. His exposure to different denominations, especially the Roman Catholic and Methodist traditions, shaped his understanding of faith and spirituality, preparing him for the unique path he would later take as a spiritual leader.
In the late 1950s, Mwazha founded the African Apostolic Church, known in Shona as VaApostora veAfrica. Sources differ slightly on whether the church was officially established in 1957 or 1959, but all agree that it quickly became one of the most influential indigenous Christian movements in Zimbabwe. The church emphasizes holiness, repentance, healing, and prophecy, combining traditional Apostolic beliefs with African cultural values. Mwazha’s personal dedication to his calling earned him the title Mutumwa, meaning “the Messenger,” a name that reflects the deep reverence his followers have for him.
Under Mwazha’s leadership, the African Apostolic Church grew rapidly across Zimbabwe and into neighboring countries. Today, it has millions of followers worldwide, with estimates ranging from three to seven million members. The church is known for its distinctive white garments, disciplined worship, and commitment to moral purity. Mwazha’s sermons often focused on living a righteous life, maintaining family unity, and seeking peace through faith. His followers view him not just as a prophet but as a father figure whose teachings continue to guide their daily lives.
Throughout his long ministry, Mwazha maintained a humble and disciplined lifestyle. He kept an untrimmed beard as a sign of his vow before God and often spoke about the importance of living in truth and service. His wife, Joyce Makaonesu Mwazha, stood by him in ministry until her passing in April 2017. Many of their children now serve as bishops and leaders within the church, continuing the work their father began more than six decades ago. In recent years, the church has faced challenges related to leadership succession, but Mwazha’s legacy remains strong, and his followers continue to regard him as their spiritual guide and inspiration.

His life story is not only one of faith and resilience but also a reflection of the broader journey of African Christianity — a movement that blends biblical teachings with African identity and spirituality. Through more than a century of life and service, Mwazha has inspired millions to live in faith, humility, and love, leaving a lasting mark on Zimbabwe’s religious and cultural history.
