Giant manta rescue in Costa Rica / Rescate de manta gigante en Costa Rica

Nos juntamos un grupo de amigos, casi todos muy aficionados a los tiburones al igual que yo, con la idea de ir a fotografiar, tiburones toro.

Cuál fue nuestra sorpresa, que al llegar al sitio no sólo nos encontramos con tiburones toro sino también nos encontramos con mantas diablo. Las mantas diablo son las mantas gigantes que son conocidas mundialmente como las mantas rayas.

Nos encontramos una manta diablo que estaba enredada en una línea de pesca para tiburones.

Por una parte es algo muy emocionante el haber podido tener la oportunidad de tener a uno de esos animales tan grandes tan cerca, pero al ver ese comportamiento que no es normal, que no es natural en ellos y darse cuenta que necesitaba ayuda, fue un sentimiento un poco de desesperación.

En ese momento, Memo Barroso que venía con nosotros, no dudó ni un instante, sacó su cuchillo, se acrcó a la manta, poniendo en riesgo su vida y poniendose en riesgo el, porque esas mantas son muy fuertes, un aletazo de esa manta te puede sacar del agua volando 4 ó 5 metros, pero quizo tratar de cortar las líneas para tratar de liberar a la manta. El cuchillo de Memo no tenía mucho filo, trataba de cortar pero no podía liberar a la manta. Y la manta se va de nosotros. Cuando pasa eso me llené de tristeza porque creí que ya no íbamos a lograr la misión, pero la manta en lugar de irse se quedó con nosotros, bajó la velocidad esperando a que nos volvieramos a acercar a ella como queriendo que la liberaramos de su molestia.

Cuando pasa esto, Emanuel, un guía de biceo de Costa Rica, que fue nuestro guia durante esos días, se avalanza sobre la manta, saca su cuchillo, sujeta la línea de pesca y empieza a cortar. Logra cortar una línea que era muy gruesa y luego logra cortar la otra línea.

Luego de escasos 5 minutos tratamos de salvarla y tuve la dicha de salvarla, fue una experiencia única, es algo increíble saber el alivio que siente un animal de esos al ser liberado de una línea pesquera.

Cuando pasa eso, los que estábamos en el agua nos llenamos de felicidad y de emoción,
no podíamos creerlo, Emanuel festejaba de tener la línea en la mano, de poder rescatar a la manta.

What was our surprise, arriving at the site not only we have Bull Sharks but we also found Giant oceanic manta rays which are known worldwide as manta rays

We saw a manta ray that was entangled in a fishing line for sharks.

On one hand it is very exciting to have the opportunity to be very close of one of those so large animals, but to see that behavior that is not normal, that is not natural in them and realize that they need help, was a little despair feeling.

At that time, Memo Barroso who came with us, did not hesitate, took out his knife approaching to the manta ray, putting at risk its life and his life, because these manta rays are very strong, a wing-beat of the manta ray can remove you from the water flying 4 or 5 meters, but wanted to try to cut the lines, try to free the manta ray. Memo’s knife wasn't sharp, was cutting but could not free the manta ray. And the manta ray went away. When that happened I felt sadness because I thought that we wouldn’t achieve the mission, but the manta ray instead of go was with us, waiting for us to approach and make it free of the annoyance.

When that happened, Emanuel, a dive guide from Costa Rica, that was our guide during those days, leaps on the manta ray, pulls out his knife, subject the fishing line and begins to cut. Manages to cut a line that was very thick and then manages to cut the other line.

After 5 minutes we try to save her and I had the happiness to save her, it was a unique experience, it is amazing to know the relief that feels an animal of those to be freed from a fishing line.

When that happened, which were in the water we were filled of happiness and excited.
We couldn't believe it, Emanuel celebrated having the line in hand, to rescue the manta ray.
