The Fuel Crisis Explained
What happened?
Fuel stations up and down the country ran dry
Long lines of cars, some stretching back for hours, just hoping to get fuel
Key workers unable to get to work: doctors, nurses, teachers, etc
Stations added a £30 cap on the limit that people can buy at the pump
27% of forecourts are still closed even today, 40% of forecourts were out of petrol on Tuesday, compared with 65% on Sunday, so things are slowly improving, but this is just a temporary solution
Cars having their fuel siphoned off in the street, even on driveways
Numerous fights at filling stations including dozens of brawls and someone being threatened with a knife before their car was attacked
Why did this happen?
More than 100,000 HGV drivers short in the UK
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) estimates that there were 16,000 fewer EU nationals working as HGV drivers in the year ending March 2021, than in the previous year. Surprise!
Reasons sighted for the shortage: Drivers Retiring (average age 55), Brexit, IR35, Changing jobs (due to undesirable working conditions), Pay rates (as low as £9.50 per hour), Covid rules
This isn’t isolated to just the UK though, the EU has a crisis all on it’s own, they want any HGV drivers leaving the EU zone. Poland was short of more than 120,000 drivers, Germany 60,000.
The industry body said some 30,000 HGV driving tests did not take place last year because of the pandemic
More recently, drivers being told to self-isolate after being notified by the NHS Covid app is also adding to the problem.
What is the Government doing?
150 Soldiers ready to help out, not enough. The UK has 8,000 fuel stations… am I the only person here that does the math on these things?
The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) says it will also draw on some of the reserve fleet of 80 tankers which the government keeps for emergencies
And the visa’s won’t start until November anyway.
3 month visas won’t work, they need to be at least 6 month visas, but even then, that’s not enough, I’d give 12 month visas right now. And by the end of 12-months, if the plan that we put in place was good enough, the problem would be solved and the UK could get back to business with our own qualified driver. Who would give up their job for 3 months work in the UK? It’s too much work. You’d have to arrange short term accommodation for 3 months
Let’s get to the main problem and the solution here:
The DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency) is the problem, you won’t find this is any media, are you ready... The DVLA currently has a backlog of 54,000 licenses.
The DVLA Needs to go on a massive recruitment campaign immediately and clear the backlog, this isn't rocket science. That will solve over 50% of this crisis without a huge effort… this is the path of least resistance...
Some drivers report phoning for 5 days straight and not being able to get through on the DVLA helpline, then when they finally do get through they are asked to send an email. Have a guess what response they get from the email they send? "Hi thanks for contacting us, we ask that you please call the DVLA hotline…" it's the exact same phone number they were calling in the first place. It’s so inefficient. Medical checks to get the licence is a minimum of 4 weeks but can take as long as 12 weeks!
If we don’t fix this soon, we’re going to see businesses not being able to survive because of the increase in the wages, or they pass on those costs to consumers, adding to inflation.
This can all be solved very quickly, 8-10 weeks to get each driver trained with a license in hand.
