Gastrointestinal bleeding (GI bleeding) is a serious and potentially life-threatening condition caused by blood loss anywhere in the digestive tract. It can result from ulcers, varices, diverticulosis, or malignancies, and if severe, may progress to shock, anemia, or even death without prompt medical care.

GI bleeding is classified into upper GI bleeding (esophagus, stomach, duodenum) and lower GI bleeding (small intestine, colon, rectum).

Upper GI bleeds commonly present with hematemesis (vomiting blood), sometimes described as coffee-ground emesis, or melena (black, tarry stools).

Lower GI bleeds typically present with hematochezia (bright red blood in stool), though melena can still occur if bleeding originates higher in the small intestine.

Patients may also present with abdominal pain, low blood pressure, tachycardia, and signs of shock in severe cases. The presence of blood in vomit or stool is a key diagnostic indicator, helping differentiate GI bleeding from other abdominal conditions.

🚑 Management in the field is supportive care and rapid transport to a hospital — there is no prehospital cure for GI bleeding. Recognizing the signs early is critical for saving lives.
