On April 22, 2025, a devastating militant attack occurred in the Baisaran Valley near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of at least 28 individuals and injuring over 20 others. The victims included 24 Indian tourists from various states, two local residents, and two foreign nationals from Nepal and the United Arab Emirates. 

The assailants, affiliated with The Resistance Front—a proxy group of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba and Hizbul Mujahideen—opened fire on tourists using M4 carbines and AK-47 rifles. This incident marks the deadliest attack on civilians in India since the 2008 Mumbai attacks. 

The attack has been widely condemned both domestically and internationally. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi labeled it a “cowardly act” and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice. The Supreme Court of India also expressed deep anguish over the incident. 

In response, Indian security forces have launched a large-scale manhunt, releasing sketches of suspects and questioning over 100 individuals. The attack has raised concerns about security in the region and its impact on tourism.
