Mercer and Morrison were originally scheduled to fight on August 9, 1991, but Morrison had to withdraw after cutting his right eyelid during a sparring session. Riddick Bowe stepped in as a substitute for Morrison, but then Mercer withdrew after injuring his left ankle. Bruce Seldon replaced Mercer and was knocked out in the first round by Bowe.The pay-per-view price for Mercer vs. Morrison was $19.95.After defeating Morrison, the WBO ordered Mercer to make his next title defense against the No. 1-rated contender, Michael Moorer. Mercer chose to vacate the title and fight 42-year-old Larry Holmes. On February 7, 1992, Holmes defeated Mercer by a 12-round unanimous decision.Robert Seltzer of the Philadelphia Inquirer reported:Mercer absorbed a left hook to the jaw early in the first round, his head whipping backward like that of a crash test dummy. The champion shook his head vigorously, as if to indicate that the punch had not hurt him, but it had. He knew it, and Morrison knew it. Morrison fought furiously in the second round, crashing hooks to the belly and uppercuts to the head. The champion jabbed and retreated, a strategy foreign to his brawling nature. He seemed confused, a warrior who was being forced to become cautious. The champion had taken poundings before, but never against such a heavy puncher. Could his chin and heart make make up for his lack of skill, as they had against Bert Cooper and Francesco Damiani? If not, he was in for a brutal beating. Mercer rallied in the fourth round, landing an overhand right to the jaw that backed up his opponent for the first time in the fight. The champion, still retreating, scored effectively to the body and head. Morrison seemed weary late in the round, his mouth wide open as he gasped during a clinch. Mercer, charging out to open the fifth round, caught his opponent with an overhand right to the face. The challenger fell against the ropes, taking a brutal beating before the referee finally stepped between the two fighters. Morrison, his arm finally untangled from the ropes, dropped to his hands and knees, remaining on the canvas for a few minutes before getting up and leaving the ring under his own power.
