José Lencastre is celebrated for his versatility and innovative approach to jazz and improvised music. Over the years, he has become a pivotal figure in Portugal’s vibrant improvised music scene, renowned for his ability to seamlessly navigate various musical genres within the contemporary creative musical idiom.
His music is deeply rooted in the belief that it possesses transformative and healing power. This approach reflects Lencastre’s dedication to contributing to a better, more harmonious world. Each performance aims to create moments of introspection, emotional resonance, and unity, allowing music to transcend its traditional boundaries and foster a profound connection between musicians and the audience.
Rafał Smoliński – a visionary of sound, mystic, bassist, philosopher, and creator of events straddling the boundaries of the arts, an enthusiast of electronics and a defiant attitude toward all forms of art – has performed and collaborated with artists such as Mieczysław Litwiński, Tadeusz Sudnik, Michał Urbaniak, Lora Szafran, Anna Gadt (Stępniewska), the MASHMISH duo, and, together with A. Rejman, co-created the Flash Mob Orchestra, a 16-person improvising ensemble.
He regularly performs across Europe, appearing at renowned festivals and venues such as Area Sismica, Krakow Jazz Festival, Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Aarhus Jazz Festival, Dragon Social Club, Jazz em Agosto, and Konfrontationen Festival.
Through his rich career, José has contributed to approximately 60 albums, 30 of which he led or co-led. This extensive discography reflects not only his dedication to his craft but also his commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring new creative horizons. His albums have been praised by prestigious publications such as Jazz.pt, All About Jazz, Free Jazz Blog, Salt Peanuts, NYC Jazz Records, and Ipsilon.
His collaborations span internationally, working with musicians such as Susan Alcorn, Raoul Van der Weide, Onno Govaert, Kresten Osgood, Peter Evans, Margaux Oswald, Michael Formanek, Clara Lai, Dirk Serries, Martina Verhoeven, Eve Risser, Guilherme Granado, Aleksandar Škorić, Sakina Abdou, Peter Orins, Andrew Lisle, Bart Maris, John Dikeman, Zbigniew Kozera, Vasco Trilla, and others.
Andrzej Rejman – a rebellious hippie yet often a refined romantic (sometimes even well-groomed), an admirer of Debussy and Ligeti (despite their stylistic differences) – this Rejman, whom his Czech piano teacher Nela Gniazdowska told at the age of six, “Nothing will come of you, Andrzejku, because you play music without canons,” has grown over the decades into a creator, improviser, and an ineffective manager of his own talent. He plays anything with keys.
