Описание к видео TEACHERS WANTED: NATIVE VS NON-NATIVE - The China case

TEACHERS WANTED: NATIVE VS NON-NATIVE - The China case

In this episode I talk about why I think non-native English teachers have a chance to work in China today, given that most native teachers prefer to stay in the larger, more cosmopolitan cities.

I also present a synopsis of the history of ESL teaching in China, from the Reform and Opening-up in 1979 until today that explains the "waves" or market bubbles that we see in ESL employment.

I also make the case for non-native teachers having an edge over native pseudo teachers (if you are a professional teacher, this does not include you).

Just because one speaks a language, does not necessarily mean one can teach it. And if your students have ever offered you a language teaching exchange, you soon realise this is 100% true.

I believe non-native teachers bring their learning experience into the classroom thus putting them much closer to the student, enabling them to understand their students' shortcomings better and suggest more effective paths of learning.

Having said that, non-native English teachers come in all levels of proficiency and that's where the issues stem from. If you wish to land a job in China, make sure you are up to the level.

Sending CV or introduction letters with either spelling or grammar mistakes is the fastest way to not get employed. Having a very thick accent is another.

As for my centre, avoiding these will only grant you a seat inside the training room where I check whether you can do what I require teachers to do or not. FYI, many native speakers can't. But that's another video.

So if you're a non-native teacher wishing to come to China, polish your skills and give it a go. China has lots of job offers throughout its land and native teachers don't want to go to those places.

That's all for now!

See you again next week!
