An outbreak of severe thunderstorms occurred on this day, with a total of 28 tornadoes in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana. Twenty-three of the tornadoes were rated F0 and five rated F1.

The Weather Channel's first severe weather expert, Fred Ostby appears in this video. Prior to coming to TWC, he was the director of the National Severe Storms Forecast Center from 1980 to 1995. He only appeared during the spring of 1997.

Jeanetta Jones, Bill Keneely, Kim Perez (Cunningham), Mike Bono, Dave Schwartz, and Mike Seidel make appearances.
