Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome. It is a medical condition that can occur in some women undergoing fertility treatments, particularly in vitro fertilization (IVF) or ovulation induction. The condition is a result of an exaggerated response to fertility medications, leading to the overstimulation of the ovaries.

During fertility treatments, medications are administered to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs. In some cases, the ovaries may respond excessively, causing them to become enlarged and lead to OHSS. The condition can range from mild to severe.

Symptoms of OHSS may include abdominal pain or bloating, nausea, vomiting, rapid weight gain, and difficulty breathing. Severe cases of OHSS can lead to complications such as fluid accumulation in the abdomen and chest, electrolyte imbalances, and blood clot formation.

Management of OHSS involves close monitoring by healthcare professionals, adjustments to the fertility treatment plan, and, in severe cases, hospitalization for supportive care. Preventive measures may include adjusting the dosage of fertility medications or withholding the administration of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone used to trigger ovulation. It's essential for individuals undergoing fertility treatments to be closely monitored by their healthcare team to minimize the risk of OHSS and address any symptoms promptly.
