The training of the first cohort of smallholder fish farmers in our fish farmers project deemed 'An integrated Approach to Enhancing Tilapia Farmer Productivity and Market Linkages' is done! This program is aimed at increasing productivity and profitability through skills upgrade and the provision of quality inputs, financing and market. The project was launched on 1st August 2022 and will run for two years.

The two-year ecosystem-based project has been designed by Lattice alongside its funding partner, the Sustainable Trade Initiative ( IDH ). It brings together veteran value chain players with 50 smallholder farmers across Western and Eastern Kenya right at the centre.

Training has already begun in our Aquaculture Academy campuses in Jewlet Fish Farm (Homabay) and Kamuthanga Fish Farm (Machakos). These farmers will now be linked with other aquaculture value chain players and financial institutions and supported in their farms to ensure a significant increase in both their productivity and profitability. The project also adopts the aggregation model where an off taker will buy fish from the farmers.

Our FoodTechAfrica Aquaculture Academy is the anchor agent since lack of skills and expertise in farm management is one of the key bottlenecks in the sector. The expected project impact is:
Significant increase in productivity at farm level
Educate farmers and help them access finance for their activities
Improved incomes of fish farmers
Direct jobs creation
