Kerkdriel (voor 1944 “Driel” genoemd) is een Nederlands dorp, gelegen aan de Maas. Het dorp telt 8.303 inwoners (per 1 januari 2023). Het behoort tot de Gelderse gemeente Maasdriel en is tevens de hoofdplaats van de gemeente. Kerkdriel ontstond in de vroege middeleeuwen op een stroomrug van de Maas.

De omgeving van Kerkdriel wordt gekenmerkt door grootschalige tuinbouw en champignonteelt.

Het hart van Kerkdriel wordt gevormd door het Mgr. Zwijsenplein, vernoemd naar voormalig aartsbisschop Joannes Zwijsen die uit Kerkdriel afkomstig was. Vroeger heette dit plein D'n Delkant. Rondom het plein zijn diverse winkels te vinden, alsmede het uitgaanscentrum. Elke woensdag staan de bekende visboeren “De Visbroeders” op het plein en elke vrijdag is er markt. In juli wordt het plein omgetoverd tot een groot kermisterrein.

Kerkdriel ligt aan de Maas op ongeveer 3 meter hoogte. De Maas liep vroeger direct ten noordoosten van de kom. Door de zand- en grindwinning in de 2e helft van de 20e eeuw ontstonden plassen ten oosten van Kerkdriel (De Zandmeren). Deze plassen zijn tegenwoordig in gebruik als recreatieterrein, jachthaven en dergelijke. Ten noordoosten van Kerkdriel ligt een golfterrein en camping.

General information about Kerkdriel

Kerkdriel (called “Driel” before 1944) is a Dutch village located at the Maas. The village has 8.303 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2023). It belongs to the municipality of Maasdriel (province Gelderland) and is also the main town of the municipality. Kerkdriel was founded in the early Middle Ages on a ridge of the Maas.

The area around Kerkdriel is characterized by large-scale horticulture and mushroom cultivation.

The heart of Kerkdriel is formed by the Mgr. Zwijsenplein, named after former Archbishop Joannes Zwijsen who came from Kerkdriel. This square used to be called D'n Delkant. There are various shops around the square, as well as the entertainment center. Every Wednesday the famous fishmongers “De Visbroeders” are on the square and every Friday there’s a market. In July the square is transformed into a large fairground.

Kerkdriel is located on the Maas at an altitude of approximately 3 meters. The Maas used to run directly northeast of the basin. Sand and gravel extraction in the second half of the 20th century created lakes east of Kerkdriel (De Zandmeren). These lakes are now used as a recreational area, marina and such. There is a golf course and campsite northeast of Kerkdriel.
