I’m sure that you’ve heard the following phrases a number of times, as I have: “I have a fantastic idea—let’s reach out to Bill Gates (Warren Buffett, Jeff Bezos, Mark Cuban, or fill in the blank . . . ) because they just gave out a billion dollars to _________________!!”
Wouldn’t it be super easy to do? Think of it, these billionaires have gobs of money, and surely, they want to know better what is going on with our non-profit!

Don’t fall for this trap. Yes, I encourage you to try this outreach, if there is a connection with your organization. But you should not live on wishful thinking. Yes, this idea sounds like a cool option to those who don’t want to build a sustainable fundraising system that will help your organization for many years to come. But if you analyze how many non-profits have already been seeking the support of these star individuals, then you probably would skip this call.

Instead, look first in your own backyard for prospects! When was the last time you had a deep, meaningful conversation with your top donors, or a long-term Board member, or a well-connected community volunteer? If you haven’t found the time due to your busy schedule (and small non-profits are always busy with a gazillion things to do!), do it first thing after you read this. You know why? Because it can lead you to something incredibly fulfilling.
