Canadians are really good at two things – comedy and prog rock, however some may say those are the same thing. There are so many great Canadian prog rock bands (including the best of them – Rush), but one that is often overlooked is Saga, one of my absolute favorites. Great songs, great playing and a very energetic band and a bit less ‘multi-part numbered opus on one side of an LP’ than many of their contemporaries. Overall, Saga is more on the rock side of prog with smart, interesting sometimes indulgent playing that is not over the top but still with songs that you can hear on the radio and sing along to. Huge in Europe, less so in North America, but if you like this style of music, a band you should definitely listen to.

I really like Saga. Michael Sadler is a great front man – like a rocker version of Peter Gabriel - and the band featured two brothers – multi-instrumentalist Jim Crichton (who usually played bass and keyboards) and one of the greatest guitar players you have probably never heard of, his brother Ian Crichton. This song, ‘On The Loose’, off their most successful album “Worlds Apart”, is a very physical song to play with a strong and aggressive bass part – really fun to play!!

Disclaimer: I am not saying this is exactly how Jim Crichton played this song, but it is how I would play it if I was playing it at a gig.
