In this powerful and unsettling history video, we uncover the truth behind the 1873 Colfax Massacre in Louisiana and how it became one of the most devastating turning points in American civil rights history. What happened in Colfax did not stay in Colfax. It reached the Supreme Court and reshaped the nation.
On Easter Sunday, April 13, 1873, dozens of Black freedmen and militia members were brutally murdered after surrendering to a white mob made up of former Confederate soldiers and members of the Ku Klux Klan. What followed was not justice, but a legal betrayal that echoed for generations.
This video explains how the massacre led to the Supreme Court case United States v. Cruikshank in 1876, a ruling that stripped the federal government of its power to protect Black citizens from racial terror. That decision opened the door for Jim Crow laws, voter suppression, lynching, and nearly a century of legalized discrimination across the South.
We break down the contested 1872 Louisiana election, the violent overthrow of Black political power in Grant Parish, and how surrendered prisoners were executed, dumped into the Red River, or buried in mass graves. Estimates of the dead range from 62 to more than 150, making Colfax one of the deadliest racial massacres in American history.
This is not just a story about the past. It is about how the law was weaponized, how accountability was denied, and how the foundations of systemic racism were cemented through the courts.
If you want to understand the origins of Jim Crow, the failure of Reconstruction, and how Supreme Court rulings shaped racial inequality in America, this is a history lesson you cannot ignore.
