Advanced analysis of bone health for osteoporosis management using 3D modelling from 2D medical images

Abstract: Osteoporosis is a musculoskeletal disease associated with the occurrence of fragile fractures in the elderly population. The current clinical gold standard for fracture risk assessment is based on bone density measurement using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan. However, it fails to identify up to 50% of the patients eligible for bone-specific pharmacological treatments, resulting in fractures that could be prevented. The 3D-Shaper software (3D-Shaper Medical, Barcelona, Spain) provides an advanced 3D analysis of the bone shape and density distribution from routine 2D DXA scans. In this presentation, we will discuss the use of 3D-Shaper in clinical research and clinical practice to improve treatment decision making and fracture prevention.

Biosketch: Ludovic Humbert is a scientist and an entrepreneur with more than 10 years experience in computational imaging. He is expert in musculoskeletal imaging, image processing, shape and appearance modelling from 2D and 3D medical images, computational biomechanics, statistical analysis and clinical trials. He is co-founder of the health technology company Galgo Medical S.L., and co-founder and CEO of 3D Shaper S.L., spin-off company of Galgo Medical. He has a strong scientific track record, he is the inventor of 3 patents under exploitation, and he is Principal investigator of several EU-funded research and innovation projects that involve Academic-Industrial collaborations.
