1987 RetroSkins Highlights: New York Jets vs Washington Redskins

"Real football" is back - and so is RetroSkins!

We go back to 1987 as the NFL season picks up following a brief - but memorable (for some teams, anyway) players strike. The Redskins inherited a 4-1 record thanks to their surprisingly successful substitutes, but had some rust to shake off before emerging victorious in front of a luke-warm RFK crowd.

Jay Schroeder was off the mark for much of this one, but found a hot hand late, rallying Washington from a 16-7 fourth quarter deficit by pulling a last-minute 10-point rally out of his hat (or somewhere else, maybe). Ken O'brien, Al Toon and some guy name Shuler (who actually scored at RFK, so not the one you're thinking of) led the Jets in what would be Joe Gibbs' only match up against this, The Other New York Team, during his first 12-season head coaching run in Washington.

As for much of the 1987 regular season, the Redskins weren't great, but good enough was good enough. Marv Albert and the slightly punch-drunk Joe Namath on the call from RFK.

This one has a little reception interference (that faint diagonal pattern), that one assumes was part of the original recording (from the olden days when TV broadcasts were actually broadcasts - oh, well).
