Pope Francis delivered a historic apology for the Roman Catholic Church’s role in residential schools at the site of the former Ermineskin Indian Residential School during a meeting with Indigenous leaders and residential school survivors in Maskwacis, Alta. on Monday.

“I am deeply sorry. Sorry for the ways in which regrettably many Christians supported the colonizing mentality of the powers that oppressed the Indigenous peoples,” Pope Francis said. “I am sorry. I ask forgiveness.”

In addition to his remarks, the Pope also said that there will be an investigation to be conducted for survivors of residential school survivors. After the ceremony, he was presented with a traditional headdress made of eagle feathers by the elders of the community, as a symbolic gesture in response to his speech.

An estimated 150,000 Indigenous children were forced to attend residential schools in Canada, where neglect and physical and sexual abuse were rampant. More than 60 per cent of the schools were run by the Catholic Church.
