What Are Short-Day Onions?
Short-day onions start bulbing when daylight hours reach around 10–12 hours per day. They’re perfect for southern growers like me because they perform best in regions with mild winters and early springs. I planted mine in late fall/early winter, and now—months later—I’ve got a harvest that’ll blow your mind!

How to Know When Onions Are Ready to Harvest:
✅ The tops naturally start to yellow and flop over
✅ The necks become soft and begin to shrivel
✅ The bulbs are full-sized, firm, and pushing up from the soil
Once these signs show up, it's time to pull 'em!

How to Cure Onions (Step-by-Step):
🧅 1. Gently pull onions from the soil without bruising them
🧅 2. Lay them out in a dry, shaded, well-ventilated space—a shed, garage, or covered porch works great
🧅 3. Leave the tops and roots on during curing to help them dry naturally
🧅 4. Spread them out so no onions are touching, or hang them in bundles
🕒 Curing takes 2–3 weeks, depending on humidity and airflow
You’ll know they’re fully cured when the necks are dry and tight, the outer skins are papery, and the roots are brittle

How to Store Cured Onions:
📦 Store in a cool, dark, and dry place—like a pantry, root cellar, or a mesh bag in the garage
💨 Make sure they have airflow—don’t seal them in plastic
🚫 Never store with potatoes (they release moisture and gases that can shorten shelf life)
⏳ When stored properly, cured onions can last 3 to 6 months, sometimes longer!
