Comparing your work to better work than your own is a very important part of becoming a better designer or developer. But, often, instead of being positive and comparing ourselves in a way that would help us improve, we get demotivated and upset at how much better someone else's work is. All of this is amplified on websites like Awwwards, where you see the flashiest websites the internet has to offer, whose whole purpose is to look awesome.

Well, you really shouldn't compare your work to those websites. They exist in a vacuum - they don't care about solving real issues, such as how to get users to convert, how to make the website easy to use or even how to make it rank high in search engines. Often, work featured on these portfolio websites is work done with the explicit purpose of looking great in a portfolio. Or it is a portfolio. Either way, it's likely not created for a real client.

And if it is, it's very likely it's a brochure website, which is strictly informative, or a website that only features a single product or service. Complex functionalities don't mix well with flashy animations and a bad user experience. And the user experience is bad on most of those websites, even though they are very impressive. They load slow, they work slow, they often make scrolling feel much less intuitive and they are difficult to navigate.

None of which you want when working on web design projects for your clients. Your clients care about results, which means so should you. Awwwards should inspire you, but you shouldn't try to copy the animation heavy style most of the websites featured there share. It is just not practical. And you definitely should not let it define the quality of your own work.
