Step-by-Step Guide to Website Migration from AWS to Azure

1. Assessment and Planning
Inventory your current AWS environment:

Web servers (EC2)

Databases (RDS, DynamoDB, etc.)

Storage (S3)

Networking (VPC, Security Groups)

Domain/DNS (Route 53)

Define migration goals:

Cost optimization

Performance

Compliance

Scalability

Choose Azure equivalents:

EC2 → Azure Virtual Machines / App Services

RDS → Azure SQL Database / Cosmos DB

S3 → Azure Blob Storage

Route 53 → Azure DNS

2. Prepare the Azure Environment
Create an Azure Subscription (if not already done).

Set up Resource Groups to organize resources.

Deploy required services (VMs, App Services, Databases, etc.).

3. Data Migration

Download from S3 and upload to Azure Blob Storage or directly to the new App Service/VM.

Export/import methods or tools like mysqldump for MySQL.

4. Application Migration
For EC2-hosted apps:

Create similar Azure VMs or use Azure App Service for web apps.

Reinstall dependencies and restore codebase.

For Dockerized apps:

Use Azure Container Instances (ACI) or Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).

Check compatibility with Azure runtime environments.

5. DNS and Domain Configuration
Migrate DNS records from AWS Route 53 to Azure DNS or any other provider.

Update A/AAAA/CNAME records to point to Azure-hosted app IPs or endpoints.

Set a low TTL before migration for quick DNS propagation.

6. Testing and Validation
Perform full UAT (User Acceptance Testing).

Validate application functionality, database connections, and integrations.

Monitor performance and latency.

7. Go Live and Cut Over
Sync latest data (files/db) one final time before go-live.

Update DNS records.

Redirect traffic to Azure environment.

Decommission AWS resources once confident.

8. Post-Migration
Set up monitoring with Azure Monitor and Application Insights.

Configure backups, scaling policies, and security settings.

Optimize performance and cost.
