Muni Bond Funds, formally known as Municipal Bond Mutual Funds, can lose you money.
Because they purchase and build a portfolio of Municipal Bonds, like any fixed income or Bond investment product, the market price or estimated value, or Muni Bond Fund share price, can and does fluctuate with market conditions. Even though Muni Bond Funds are a "package" of Municipal Bonds, like any single Bond or fixed income, Muni Bond Funds can be impacted by many market conditions such a Credit Risk and Interest Rate Risk.

The "diversification" feature of any fixed income or Bond Mutual Fund, including Muni Bond Funds, does not help nor provide protection in regards to Interest Rate Risk. There is an inverse relationship between interest rates and Bond prices. If interest rates go up, bond prices go down. So, every Municipal Bond in the Muni Bond Fund portfolio will decline. There is no avoiding this. The Bond math is what it is. Therefore, if you own Muni Bond Funds, because interest rates have risen, your share prices have already lost.
