In geometry, the circumference is the perimeter of a circle. More generally, the perimeter is the curve length around any closed figure. The circumference of a circle is related to one of the most important mathematical constants. This constant, pi, is represented by the Greek letter π. The first few decimal digits of the numerical value of π are 3.141592653589793. π is defined as the ratio of a circle's circumference C to its diameter d.

C = π × d = 2π × r.

The formula for the area of a circle (more properly called the area enclosed by a circle) is based on a similar method. Given a circle of radius r, it is possible to partition the circle into sectors, as shown in the video. Each sector is approximately triangular in shape, and the sectors can be rearranged to form an approximate parallelogram. The height of this parallelogram is r, and the width is half the circumference of the circle, or πr. Thus, the total area of the circle is πr^2.

A = π × r × r = π × r^2 = (π × d^2)/4
