The following are the general steps for making charcoal by carbonizing apple tree wood :

I. Preparation of raw materials

1. Collect apple tree wood :
Select suitable branches and trunks of apple trees. Try to choose parts that are relatively dry and have no obvious decay or pests and diseases. The waste branches pruned from orchards can be collected and utilized !

2. Cutting treatment :
Use tools such as saws to cut the apple tree wood into appropriate lengths for the convenience of subsequent operations. Generally, it is more appropriate to control the length within dozens of centimeters, and the specific length should be determined according to the carbonization equipment and other situations !

II. Drying treatment

Place the cut apple tree wood in a place with good ventilation, dryness and sufficient sunlight for drying, so that its water content is reduced to a certain level. Usually, it is ideal that the water content is below 20%. This can make the carbonization process smoother and also help improve the quality of the charcoal !

III. Loading into the kiln (or carbonization equipment)

1. Build a simple earthen kiln (traditional method) :
An earthen kiln of an appropriate size can be dug and built in an open space. The bottom of the kiln should be flat and have a certain ventilation structure, such as reserving ventilation holes. Then, stack the dried apple tree wood neatly into the earthen kiln. Pay attention to reserving a certain space to allow the hot air to circulate evenly. After filling it up, close the opening of the kiln !

2. Use a professional carbonization furnace (modern method) :
According to the operation instructions of the carbonization furnace, evenly load the apple tree wood into the corresponding compartments in the carbonization furnace, close the furnace door and ensure good sealing to prevent heat loss and abnormal air inflow !

IV. Carbonization process

1. Ignition and temperature rise (for earthen kiln) :
Ignite the fuel at the bottom of the kiln (such as some flammable kindling materials and some wood) through the reserved ignition port, and slowly raise the temperature. Control the fire properly to make the temperature rise steadily. During the whole carbonization process, the temperature needs to be gradually increased to several hundred degrees Celsius (generally around 400 °C - 600 °C), and it needs to last for a certain period of time, usually ranging from several hours to more than ten hours. During this period, pay attention to the situation inside the kiln through observation holes to ensure uniform carbonization !

2. Set parameters (for carbonization furnace) :
Set the corresponding parameters such as temperature and time on the professional carbonization furnace, start the carbonization program, and the equipment will automatically raise the temperature and carry out the carbonization operation according to the settings. Operators only need to monitor the running status of the equipment to ensure its normal operation !

V. Cooling and taking out

1. Natural cooling (for earthen kiln) :
After the carbonization is completed, stop heating and let the charcoal in the kiln cool naturally. This process may take a long time, such as one day or even several days. After the temperature in the kiln drops and it is ensured to be safe, open the opening of the kiln and take out the charcoal !

2. Cooling according to the program (for carbonization furnace) :
After the carbonization is completed, the carbonization furnace will cool down according to the set cooling program. After the temperature drops to the appropriate range, open the furnace door and take out the made charcoal !

VI. Subsequent treatment

Screen the taken-out charcoal to remove some impurities and broken pieces that have not been completely carbonized. Then it can be packaged and stored in a dry and ventilated place to avoid the charcoal from being affected by moisture and losing its quality !

It should be noted that in many regions, privately felling apple trees for making charcoal may violate relevant forestry regulations. It is necessary to ensure that the source of raw materials is legal and compliant, and safety protection measures should be taken during the carbonization process to prevent accidents such as fires !
