Every summer, thousands of cheap polystyrene bodyboards break after just a few hours of use — leaving our beaches littered with plastic confetti.

In Newquay, Mayor Drew Creek is taking action. Recycling stations have been relaunched at South Fistral, Porth and Towan so broken boards can be binned properly instead of ending up in the ocean.

But it doesn’t stop there. The Mayor is urging local shops to stop selling these disposable boards altogether, and instead promote durable alternatives that ride better, last longer, and don’t pollute our coastline. With quality boards and hire services already available, there’s no need for throwaway plastic.

Bodyboard Holidays founder Rob Barber caught up with Mayor Drew Creek to talk about the initiative and share his thoughts on why it matters for the sport, the environment, and future generations of beachgoers.
