This video depicts, through an auto tour of the Turner, Oregon area with Melvin Baker, the early pioneer Donation Land Claims in the Turner area. Melvin also explains items of historical relevance regarding his Great Grand Father, William Harrison Baker who was an early pioneer that settled in the Turner Oregon area in 1852.
Melvin Baker was born May 15, 1924. He married Pauline June 30, 1947. They had two children Charles, born in 1949 and Janet Raeline, born in 1955. They also raised, Harrie Elser, brother of Pauline’s from the time he was 13 to 23, Pauline passed away May 14, 2016. Son Charles has children Chris, Darren and Jenny. Janet Raeline has two children, Harrison and Taylor. Melvin’s wife, Pauline passed away May 14, 2016. He and Pauline had 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Melvin has one sister, Shirley, born in 1929. He is 93 at the time of this video. Melvin has lived in the Turner area all his life except for the two years he was in the military during World War II. His Pioneer heritage family has lived in the area since his Great Grandfather, William Harrison Baker and Great Grandmother, Elizabeth Henderson Baker, came over the Oregon Trail in 1851. His grandfather and grandmother, Solan and Ida Baker lived on the original Land Claim established in 1852 by his father William Harrison Baker. Melvin had the benefit of his grandmother living with them several years before she passed away when Melvin was 17. He had the benefit of all the history that his grandmother could remember. During recent years his daughter in-law, Sue Pierce, has helped him in researching their relatives of the Bakers, Ferris’ and Brigg’s past.
