Описание к видео Finding and opening up a Victorian water well

Something a little different from my normal night vision satellite tracking.

In 2005 I discovered I had got an old water well in my garden. It had been filled to the top with everything that could fit down the shaft and was capped off.
Each evening we would work for an hour, removing about 1ft of soil and slowly worked our way down to the bottom, 36 ft down after about 6 weeks.
The original well is believed to have been constructed in the 1800's for a farm that stood on this land.
In the late 1930's a housing estate was built and the well was opened up about another 3ft to provide drinking water for the estate.
The pump, pumping handle, draw pipe and strainer were still in place and may have been installed in the 1920's.

When mains water eventually arrived in the village in the 1940's, a sign was placed on the pump by Brixworth District Council, warning residents to boil the water before consumption. This sign was also found at the bottom of the well.
I believe the village once had about 60 wells, I know of three others that still hold water today.

Twelve years later, nature has taken over. From the top row of bricks to a depth of about 6ft, several varieties of ferns grow and spread across the opening and at least one frog has made its home in the clear water at the bottom.

I have created a playlist for my water well and water cistern videos here    • Exploring water wells & soft water cisterns

I found an interesting PDF written by a well sinker. Here he explains how a well was dug and his experiences in well sinking.
