Stages of Crime

1. Intention

Intention is the first stage of any crime .It is a mental state and is also known as psychological stage. It is the state in which offendor decides his motive or direction towards the offence.
Mere intention to commit a crime is not a punishable offence in IPC because it is very difficult for prosecution to prove the guilty intention.
But for every crime criminal intention must be proved .

2. Preparation

Preparation means to arrange necessary measures to commit the offence. Intention alone or followed by preparation is not punishable in IPC. Preparation is not punishable as in many cases it is very difficult for prosecution to prove that preparation is made for a particular offence. But there are certain exceptions where mere preparation to commit a crime is a punishable offence like preparation for wages war against state,peparation for dacoity etc.

3.Attempt

Attempt is the direct movement towards commencement of crime after preparation. In IPC attempt is made a punishable offence. When a person attempt to commit a crime then he is liable for punishment even if has fallen short of the crime.

4.Commencement

It is final stage of crime. A person is held liable for the punishment of crime after successful commencement of criminal act. ignorance of law is not a excuse. Here ignorance of law is not a excuse. After successful commencement he is said to be guilty
