Ozzy, the puppy that was found suffocating inside of a tied-off garbage bag on the side of the road in Battle Creek on Aug. 13, has been making notable strides in his recovery journey, according to Sophia DiPietro, executive director of All Species Kinship (A.S.K.)
Rescuers believe the bag Ozzy was tied up inside of was thrown out of a moving car. He was found by a woman who said she heard his cries while at a stop sign.
Initially in critical condition, Ozzy has been under the care of A.S.K., a nonprofit animal rescue and rehabilitation organization based in Battle Creek.
"As you can see, he's way more lively than the last time I was holding him," DiPietro told News Channel 3 on Wednesday, two weeks to the date after his rescue.
DiPietro noted that Ozzy is gaining weight and doing well overall, but seems to be still learning to feel safe with humans, and doesn't always love being held.
"Right now, he's not acting, he's just not like a regular puppy," DiPietro said. "People think that he would want to be playful with humans or be kissing and loving towards us, and he's not there yet."
It could also be his personality, but she said, that will become more clear with time and continued recovery.
Unfortunately, Ozzy has recently lost his hearing, likely due to brain damage from the incident, according to DiPietro. On a positive note, however, since the last update - when it was believed that he had lost his eyesight entirely - Ozzy has since regained some vision, and DiPietro is hopeful that it may continue to improve as he receives medical attention.
Another remarkable sign of progress, according to DiPietro, is that Ozzy is now being able to control his bladder. She said, he is also eating on his own, which is a promising sign for rehabilitation.
One step at a time, Ozzy is getting closer to being ready to find his forever home, although his future is still uncertain, according to DiPietro. It will be several months before Ozzy is ready to be considered for adoption, she said, as more medical evaluations and treatments are needed.
"The severity with this case is of course the addition of not only being abandoned, but being trapped inside of a garbage bag," DiPietro said.
A second dog, that DiPietro said was a spitting image, was discovered dead along a Battle Creek road less than a week after Ozzy.
