Fun Facts About Alpacas:

Origins: Alpacas come from South America, mainly Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Chile.

Domestication: They’ve been domesticated for thousands of years by the Inca civilization for their fleece.

Two Breeds: There are two types—Huacaya (fluffy, teddy bear-like fleece) and Suri (long, silky, dreadlock-like fleece).

Fiber: Their fleece is softer, warmer, and lighter than sheep’s wool, and it’s hypoallergenic (contains no lanolin).

Size: Adult alpacas are about 3 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh 100–200 pounds—smaller than llamas.

Diet: They are herbivores, grazing mainly on grass and hay. They have three stomach compartments to help digest fibrous plants efficiently.

Teeth: Their lower teeth keep growing, so they need to be naturally worn down by chewing.

Temperament: Generally gentle, curious, and social, but they can spit when annoyed or threatened.

Communication: They hum to communicate and also make warning calls when danger is near.

Lifespan: They typically live 15–20 years, though some can reach 25.

Herd Animals: Alpacas don’t like being alone; they thrive in herds for safety and comfort.

Guardians: While alpacas themselves are timid, farmers sometimes use llamas or dogs to protect them from predators.
