So here we are in the studio again this week and its the school of hard-knocks pretty much now that I've got everything hooked up the way I want it. The Leslie Speaker (910) is mic'd up with a single Realistic brand dynamic microphone and going straight into the Yamaha MT-400 whereas my Greco Les Paul from 1972 is running through the Mooer GE-300 guitar effects pedal. The drums are coming from my Roland TD-11 Electronic Drums.

Recording to cassette tape has loads of benefits which may not be immediately obvious. The most important being that it forces you to do your best when recording a performance. Why? Well, you're using tape for one, and I don't know about you but I really don't want to screw up a guitar part, flub a drum fill or play a wrong chord on the Hammond organ and have to go back and re-record over that section of tape because over time that tape can and will wear out and eventually the quality of the tape will degrade. This factor plays a huge role in forcing the musician into a place where they MUST do their best and tightest performance. Having to sit there and rewind your tape over and over and over gets extremely annoying and takes A LONG TIME. Therefore, the pressure is on to nail your performance the first time as opposed to recording digital.

Recording to an analog 4-track multitrack cassette tape recorder is an excellent way to put your mix into perspective too because you are limited to only 4 tracks total, You have to choose ONLY the most important elements for your mix and in doing so you find that ultimately, you don't really need 10 or 20 or 300 tracks to say what you want to say. You can also get a powerful and effective mix with using only 3-4 tracks if you try.

So I encourage everyone watching to make purchasing an old 4-track tape recorder on their next spending spree and use it! You will be surprised! If you can't afford one at the moment then hop on to whatever you can use, even if its your phone or Cubase and LIMIT YOURSELF! This is where creativity and spontaneousness come together and help to bring out the best in you as a musician. Tape machines are hard-asses but it's for your own good!
