The Chicago Public Schools leadership has been closing neighborhood schools in communities of color who oppose this disruption of their children's education. Neighborhood schools serve as anchors in the community and are where generations come together as teachers, administrators, staff, parent leaders and students.

Many people view these closings as a direct racist attack on areas that are already suffering from divestment, unemployment and poverty. They feel that the introduction of charter schools is diverting resources away from public schools and is a first step toward gentrification and the forcing of present residents from their homes. They also feel that school closings fuel violence on the streets of Chicago.
