I have wanted to see this amazing little bird for almost two months. Bird watchers first found him at a park in Santa Cruz, California at the end of December 2022. He’s been there for almost two months.
We had two trips booked to Santa Cruz and had to cancel them both because of the atmospheric rivers in December/January and their affect on Santa Cruz and places between there and Sacramento, where we live.
Finally, we arrived at the park in Santa Cruz on the afternoon of Friday, February 17. We searched for but could not find the Red-flanked Bluetail. But we returned the next morning and, with the help of other birders, got right on it.
The bluetail is a hyperactive species that hunts for insects from perches, diving to the ground and to branches in trees to get them and then flying back to another perch to do it all over again. He flicks his wings regularly making him appear nervous or just overflowing with energy. When he looks at you straight on, his white throat is probably the first feature you will notice. He has an eye ring, red sides, and a blue tail, just as his name implies. Red-flanked Bluetails are common where they occur from Finland to Siberia and other places far from California, but they have only been recorded in California six times
