Struggle of ITI Workers in Bengaluru from December, 2021

On 1st December 2021, 80 workers in the employment of India’s first Public Sector Undertaking in the country, M/s ITI Ltd. at Bengaluru, were refused employment by the management. The workers have worked for long periods between 3 to 30 years, and were stopped for the sole reason that they formed a Union and demanded their rights.

Despite long years of service, the workers are guised as “contract workers” and denied basic rights. Majority of them are Dalit, and a large number are women. The baneful system of contract labour is itself highly unjust and condemnable and is a means of depriving workers of their rights.

After the lockdown in 2020, the workers came together to form the Karnataka General Labour Union (ITI unit) affiliated to AICCTU.

The Regional Labour Commissioner has instructed the management of ITI Ltd. to give jobs back to the workers. However, they have failed to comply with the same.

The workers hence are protesting from 1st December, 2021 at the gates of ITI Ltd. demanding that they be given their job back.
