Scripture is clear that salvation is entirely the work of God, and never something we can purchase or repay. Romans 4:5 says “to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness.” Paul makes it plain that works contribute nothing to justification, because it is faith alone that receives the gift of righteousness. Ephesians 2:8–9 drives this home by saying “for by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not of yourselves, it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” If salvation costs us anything, even our own sacrifices, then it ceases to be a gift, and instead becomes a wage. Romans 6:23 contrasts these two perfectly, “for the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Eternal life is a gift, already purchased by the blood of Christ, not something we add to or earn through effort.

Acts 17:24–25 declares that God “does not dwell in temples made by hands, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all people life and breath and all things.” Everything we have is already His, and Isaiah 64:6 tells us that even our righteous deeds are as filthy rags. Jesus said “blessed are the poor in spirit” in Matthew 5:3, which means recognizing that before God we are spiritually bankrupt, with nothing to offer. Hebrews 10:11–12 shows that repeated sacrifices can never take away sins, but Jesus offered one sacrifice for sins for all time, and then sat down at the right hand of God, because the work was finished. To teach that salvation costs us anything at all is to say that the cross was not enough, and to make Jesus into a middle man delivering what we paid for, instead of the Savior who paid it all Himself. The truth is the gospel of grace, that Jesus paid the full price, that eternal life is His gift to all who believe, and that all the glory belongs to Him alone.
