Although the castle was first built in 1067, it was badly damaged during the English Civil War and it was rebuilt in the 1800s while remaining loyal to the medieval gothic architectural style. The castle was strategically built on high grounds, ensuring good visibility of any potential threats and a military advantage in case a rival army laid siege.

William the Conqueror commissioned Arundel Castle to be built, to protect the area from a French invasion. The first Earl of the castle was Roger de Montgomery, a loyal friend and ally to William.

Although several kings owned the castle over the centuries, The Dukes of Norfolk have lived in the castle for over 800 years. In fact, Arundel castle is still the official residence of the Duke of Norfolk.

The castle was one of the first English country houses to have electric lights, integral fire fighting equipment, service lifts and central heating. Just as spectacular as the castle itself, the castle’s gardens have been open to visitors since 1854.
