In the “good old days” several plague epidemics raged in Vienna. Countless residents fell victim to them. The dead were then buried in the cemetery of St. Stephen's Cathedral (Stephansdom in Vienna). When this was dissolved, however, their bare bones were kept in the catacombs under the cathedral, where they still lie today. The song is dedicated to the dead in the catacombs of St. Stephen.
