TV heartthrob Paul Wesley says his latest role in Shawn Christensen's movie, "Before I Disappear," was a "welcome relief to not be doing something supernatural."
The 32-year-old "Vampire Diaries" star took time out from shooting the hit series to play a supporting role alongside "Shameless" star Emmy Rossum in Christensen's latest offering, which is showing in Venice.
Christensen takes the lead role as Richie who, at a low point in his life, receives a phone call from his estranged sister asking him to watch over his niece, Sophia, for a couple of hours.
Wesley plays Gideon, Richie's boss and New York clubber.
"Gideon is a guy who is a hopeless romantic," explains the actor from the Venice Film Festival.
"He's living in this drug-fueled clubby New York City world and he's hopelessly in love with this girl."
It's a character Wesley said he could relate to.
"I believe in love," explains Wesley.
"I am such a sappy, I mean, like for me it's like the driving point of my life. It's the only thing I have is love on any level. I really am disinterested in anything else and so I just connected with him on that level. For him this girl was everything. And also, I hate to be so blunt about it, but it was the complete opposite to the character I play on TV for the last 5 seasons, 6 seasons."
The collaboration between Wesley and Christensen has been a long time in the pipeline as the two first met at the tender age of 14.
"We used to take acting classes together in New York City," recalls Wesley.
" I grew up in the New York area, Shawn grew up in the New York area and we have just always been like-minded when it comes to film tastes and just art in general, not to sound pretentious. Shawn had written his first screenplay while he was touring with his band and I gave that screenplay to my agent at the time and said, 'This is the best thing I have ever read, you have got to do something with this guy, he's got to be a writer.'"
The movie is an expansion of Christensen's 2013 Oscar-winning short, "Curfew," which he also wrote, directed and starred in.
This time around for Christensen, combining all three disciplines wasn't so easy.
"I had more trouble on the feature film because oddly enough in the feature there was less resources, less money, less time than on the short film," he explained.
"I shot the short film at two pages a day and I shot the feature film at six pages a day. And so doing all those roles was harder on the feature and not really that difficult on the short film."
"Before I Disappear" is showing in the Venice Days selection of this year's festival.
