JC and I talk about the life and works of John Williams - no, not the Great American composer, but John Williams the literary legend and author of not just one but two Great American Novels in Butcher's Crossing (1960) and Stoner (1965). He also wrote Augustus, a semi-fictional exploration of the incredible lifetime of achievements and tribulations of Augustus Caesar as told through a series of period authentic letters and artifacts.

After our John Williams overview, we conduct a deep dive into Butcher's, one of the best frontier novels ever written. Set in the 1970s on the Great Plains and Colorado's Rocky Mountains, Butcher's follows protagonist Will Andrews on his journey West in search of a spiritual fulfillment he cannot articulate but which he believes only nature can deliver.

We'll save Stoner and Augustus for their own pods - truly, each of these books deserves its own time and space for discussion. Hopefully this gives you some fun content to enjoy over the holiday and maybe, just maybe, welcomes you into the John Williams fan club as well.
