As the festival approached, the energy among the boys of the neighborhood soared. They stayed up all night building the pandal, cleaning the grounds, arranging supplies, and decorating the stage. The excitement made time fly.
The open ground where the puja took place was just a couple of minutes’ walk from Rahul’s house. Behind that ground was a narrow alley that led to Sonia Didi’s home — the central figure of this story.
That year, Sonia, then 21, was actively involved in all preparations. She laughed, helped, and worked like everyone else — yet her eyes betrayed her. Her smile seemed forced, her energy distant. It felt as if she was waiting for someone to ask her what was wrong, so she could break down and confess everything.
But Rahul and his friends were too young then to understand such adult emotions.
That evening went by as usual — chatting, joking, eating puffed rice with oil and spices while sitting on the club floor. Around 9 PM, everyone returned home, excited for the next day — the day of the puja.
But the next morning, around 5 AM, Rahul was woken up by his friend Tiyas, breathless outside his window.
“Bhai,” he said, “Sonia has hanged herself.”
Rahul was in disbelief. “What?! When?”
Tiyas explained that Sonia had asked her mother to wake her up early to pick flowers. But when her mother entered the room around 4:30 AM, she found Sonia hanging from the ceiling fan.
Everything after that felt like a blur.
Just last night, she was laughing and working with them. What happened in a few hours that made her take such a step? Sonia had been deeply loved by everyone in the neighborhood. Rahul ran to her house, but by then the gates were locked and the crowd had gathered.
No one could see her face. Her family — especially her parents — were devastated.
That day, Batatala, usually so vibrant and alive during festivals, fell under the shadow of sorrow.
