1. History of WORK
● Founded in 1977 by Takeshi Tanaka
● Takeshi named the company WORK because his statement that “If you work hard, anything can be achieved, that’s why I chose the name WORK for the company”
● 1979 opened their first 3 piece factory in Osaka
● 1980 built their head office
● 1982 became involved in motorsports with Team Equip
● 1983 and 1984 expanded rapidly opening offices in fukuoka, kanagawa, sendai, hiroshima
● 1983 they began exporting wheels to the USA
● 1985 they launched the WORK Emotion line
● 1986 built their second factory in Shiki
● Late 80s/early 90s built another factory in Okayama, sales offices in nagoya, okayama, niigata, omiya, sapporo, kanazawa
● 1995 launched the Work Meister series
● 2003 became ISO9001 certified - a high standard for production
2. Most popular WORK models
○ WORK’s early models like the equip lineup were focused on small diameter racing wheels and they still make these today with the equip 01/03 being largely unchanged since the 70s and the equip 40 bringing modern style to this lineup
○ Their product line really hit it’s stride in the late 90s to early 00s with the release of the Meister and VS lineups, bringing us classics like the meister s1 3p, vs-kf, vs-xx, equip 05, and more
○ The Emotion lineup like T7R, M8R, CR Kiwami, have evolved over the years but strike a balance between budget and performance. They are made with WFT - Work Forming Technology combining the cost savings of a cast wheel with the strength and weight of a forged barrel. you can snag a set for about $1800 in most sizes
○ The Meister S1 3P is the wheel you probably know them for. Starting life as a centerlock JGTC wheel the meister was adapted for street use and is one of WORK’s most popular models from the 90s to today
3. What makes them so good/why should you buy them
● WORK was the first to use the “on demand” system where production is driven by orders, meaning your wheels are made for YOU
● WORK focuses on strength before anything else, this is why their wheels stand the test of time, and you still see lots of 30+ year old work wheels on the road today
● WORK combines a cast center disk with a forged inner and outer rim half, this allows them to make complicated designs that can only be achieved with casting, and keeping costs down meaning their wheels are more affordable, while maintaining strength on the inner and outer barrel.
Conclusion
● WORK is one of the oldest wheel brands and one of the first producers of 3 piece wheels, coming up on nearly 50 years of manufacturing
● WORK builds some of the finest made to order wheels on the planet
● If you want strength and style, WORK is the brand for you.
